Second Sunday before Advent

What and who do we rely on at the deepest point of our lives? The readings today face us all with this question.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Malachi 4 v 1-2a
The prophet comforts the hearers who are suffering under the arrogant rule of those who do evil.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3 v 6-13
Paul is writing to the very young Church about how to live while they wait for God’s action in their midst.

Gospel: Luke 21 v 5-19
Jesus spells out to his disciples what they can expect and what they must rely on.

Hymns: 468, 656, 667, 695
Communion: 554, 575, 929

6.00pm Evensong
Readings: Daniel Ch 6, Matthew 13 v 1-9 & 18-22
Hymns: 580, 756, 691; Psalm: 97.

Prayer of the week:

Lord God of all the ages, the One who is, who was and who is to come, stir up within us a longing for your kingdom, steady our hearts in time of trial, and grant us endurance until the sun of justice dawns. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Those suffering hardship as a result of the flooding in parts of England
  • All politicians in the forthcoming General Election that they may be motivated by compassion and the common good
  • A peaceful solution to the problems of the Middle East

Pulpit Conservation
Over the past few weeks the pulpit has been carefully and lovingly conserved by Cliveden Conservation to ensure that the essential features and colours are not lost to future generations. A decorative metal band is also being conserved for St. Peter’s Chapel which will be remounted once the structural investigations there and any remedial work have been completed. James

Making the most of Advent
I have purchased some copies of Jane Williams’ book ‘The Art of Advent’ which explores this season by providing a short commentary on a different painting each day.
