Christ the King // Sunday before Advent

Our focus for our worship today is confession, for it is only through acknowledgement and repentance that we are able to draw close to Christ our King, whom we honour and
celebrate today.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Jeremiah 23 v 1-6
The prophet speaks words of warning from God to the shepherds who do not care for their sheep and God's promise that He will intervene to take care of them himself.

Second Reading: Colossians 1 v 11-20
St Paul tells his readers that Christ makes known who God is and through faith in him we are forgiven, redeemed and strengthened.

Gospel: Luke 23 v 33-43
On the Cross Christ reveals himself to be the true King, not just of the Jews, but to all who turn to him.

Hymns: 382, 683, 104. Psalm 46
Communion: 931, 323, 381.

6.00pm Evensong

Readings: 1 Samuel 8 v 4-20, John 18 v 33-37
Hymns: 433, 490, 500, 272; Psalm: 72v1-7.

Prayer of the week:

God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us your Son, the beloved one who was rejected, the saviour who appeared defeated. Yet the mystery of his kingship illuminated our lives. Show us in his death the victory that crowns the ages, and in his broken body the love that unites heaven and earth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Men, women and children who have died as a result of war
  • Governments and politicians that they may promote a world of peace and understanding
  • Those who have been victims of war and those who commit ‘war crimes’ through violence and terrorism
  • Restorative justice and those who work with ex-offenders to help them change and seek a new direction in their lives.
  • Risborough Festival, Church and Village Fetes
  • Red Lion Lane & Salisbury Close (PR) Coleheath Bottom & Laurel Close (Sp)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
    • Pam Johnson, Veronica Parker, Pam Strickland, Mary Copcutt, John Hobson, Mary Kent, Michael Hopkins, Elsie Ratlidge and Joe Ratlidge
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Georgina Cole, Ginny Gibbs, Cathy Owen, Gail, Suzy Cooper, Jonathan Kelly, Joshua, Marj, Bill, Sue, Jo, Marriette and Veronica Taylor
  • The recently departed:
    • Shobha Mani Hart, Tim Lee

    • Sheila Benham, Margaret Martin, Dorothy Pine, Lily Barraclough, Keith Barnes.

Pulpit Conservation
Over the past few weeks the pulpit has been carefully and lovingly conserved by Cliveden Conservation to ensure that the essential features and colours are not lost to future generations. A decorative metal band is also being conserved for St. Peter’s Chapel which will be remounted once the structural investigations there and any remedial work have been completed.

Confirmation ‘Classes’
A number of people have recently expressed an interest in being confirmed in the Church of England. If you (or your son/daughter) would like to consider this please contact the parish office on parishoffice@stmarysrisborough.org.uk. The ‘classes’ usually involve a couple of sessions lasting approximately two hours each.

My daughter Ellie has taken part in a sponsored hitchhike from Sheffield - she is a student at the university - to Glasgow to raise funds for the Snowdrop project (to support survivors of human trafficking); Molly's Fund (a mental health charity); Target Housing Sheffield and Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. The school is very grateful for the help that has been given and is now ready to re-start the reading helper programme. If you have previously been involved with this, or if you are interested in finding out more about volunteering in this capacity, please contact Jane Curry on 07973 300758 or at jlecurry@gmail.com, or in person at church on Sunday.

Monks Risborough C of E Primary School Christmas Fair
