The 10th Sunday after Trinity


Jesus chose to face his own death, realising that through doing so he would discover real life. He calls on us to take up our own cross in order to find such life for ourselves. In our worship today, let us explore the meaning of taking up our crosses to follow Jesus.

First Reading Jeremiah 15 v 15 - 21
Jeremiah has been called by God’s name and God will deliver him from all who seek to harm him.
Second Reading Romans 12 v 9-end
St Paul sets out the characteristics of Christian behaviour, calling upon Christians to hate what is evil, and hold fast to what is good.
Gospel Reading Matthew 16 v21-end
Jesus foretells his death and resurrection, turning on Peter when Peter attempts to remonstrate with him, and calls upon all his disciples to take up their own cross in order to follow Jesus. .

Prayer for the week

O God, whose work burns like a fire within us, grant us a bold and faithful spirit, that in your strength we may be unafraid to speak your word and follow where you lead. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Today Jesus teaches us how to manage disputes and conflicts among church members so that reconciliation can be found through love. So let’s praise God who is always working to call us back to him for forgiveness and new life.

First Reading Romans 13 v 8-14

St Paul explains that in loving our neighbour we are fulfilling God’s commandments. He bids us turn away from wrongdoing so as to be ready for our own salvation.

Gospel Reading Matthew 18 v 15-20
Jesus explains how disputes between members of a church should be resolved. He shows us a way of forgiveness and reconciliation which is life-giving and in accordance with God’s will.

God of glory, the end of our searching, help us to lay aside all that prevents us from seeking your kingdom, and to give all that we have to gain the pearl beyond all price, through our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Your prayers are asked this week for:
• peace throughout the world, particularly in Libya
• the people of East Africa and those organisations seeking to come to their aid
• Financial stability in the world’s economies
• Those who lead and organise outward bound holidays, for the thrills of exciting and challenging activities.
• Bucks University College, all young people in this area at university and those who have recently received exam results,
• Residents of Southfield Rd, The Avenue (PR) and Hillside (Speen) & Oddley Lane (Bledlow)
• Those in need who are known in our parish:

The Whitechapel Mission – Harvest Collection

As in the past, donations are being accepted at the Harvest Festival services at St. Peter’s Owlswick on September 25th at 6 pm and at St. Dunstan’s, Monks Risborough on October 2nd at 11am. Details of what items to bring can be found in the parish magazine on page 7, the church notice board or by logging on to www.whitechapelmission.org.uk, and then clicking on to ‘how to help’ and then ‘harvest’. Visiting Westminster Abbey and 'pilgrim tours:
James has a pass that admits up to people free of charge; to the Abbey (normally £16 per adult). There is also the opportunity to visit the Abbey as part of a parish group on Wednesday evenings after the Abbey has closed for general visiting. These pilgrim tours begin at 6.15pm ending with Compline at 7.15pm and we could make a Parish group. Please speak to James if you are interested in either or both of these.

Fellowship Meeting Sept 8th
Christine Reid will talk about ROPE – Relief for oppressed people everywhere. 8pm in the church Hall. Friends and Husbands Welcome

Cyclists and Walkers Visit Churches

This is being held in the church grounds. We shall need plenty of help on the day and beforehand. Please sign on the two notices in the porch if you can lend a hand.

TV Digital Switchover

On 14 Sep BBC1 & 2 will no longer be available and you will have to retune your TV set or box. On 28th Sept the remaining analogue channels will go digital and you will need to retune again. You can find more information at www.digitaluk.co.uk. Please spare a thought for anyone you know who may need help - and ask them whether they are ready. More information is available from the Help Scheme (0800 40 85 900), www.helpscheme.co.uk.' or in the leaflets near the main door of the church.
