Sunday 9th June 2013
Second Sunday after Trinity

Stirred by the Spirit of God and warmed by the love of the Son, we come into God’s presence to bring him our worship and our lives.

10.00am Parish Eucharist

Hymns: 716, 715, 252
Psalm: 30 v 1-6
Communion: 475, 310, 83

First Reading    1 Kings 17 v 8-16

Having left Israel at God’s command during a famine, Elijah is sustained by a Phoenician widow’s hospitality and God’s miraculous provision of food. When the widow’s son dies, Elijah’s prayers restore his life, confirming Elijah as a man of God.

Second Reading     Galatians 1 v 11-end

Paul emphasises the authenticity of his apostleship, received through God’s direct revelation of his Son. God’s intervention has transformed him from zealous Jew to preacher of the Christian faith he once sought to destroy.

Gospel    Luke 7 v 11-17

When Jesus encounters a funeral party on the outskirts of a town near Nazareth, he brings the widow’s dead son back to life. The awed crowd acclaim Jesus as God’s prophet.

11.30am Owlswick Holy Communion
Readings: 1 Kings 17 v 8-16, Luke 7 v 11-17

6.00pm Choral Evensong
Readings: Genesis 8 v 15 to 9 v 17, Mark 4 v 1-20
Hymns: 649, 691, 428
Psalm 44 v 1-8

Prayer for the Week
Eternal God, in Christ you have sought us with a shepherd’s heart, and we have rejoiced to be found and restored. Multiply in all the world the wonders of your saving grace, and gather your scattered people until heaven resounds in jubilation at humanity made whole and creation restored. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  •  Prince Philip during his stay in hospital
  •  The millions of men, women and children who have become refugees as a result of the fighting in Syria
  •   Bucks Arts Week, The Flower Festival and the archaeological dig all taking place over the next few weeks
  •  for companies who make a product and for those who sell it, for good design, good quality and good price
  •  those who live in Upper Icknield Way (PR) and West Lane (B)
  •  those in need who are known in our parish:
  •   and also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair, Marion Mullens, David Holding
  •  The recently departed:
  •  Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Tony Lane, Gordon Marr, Joan Downes, Bob Boyce

Please remember the charities that the parish supports, in particular this week:
Parents and Children Together (PACT), working to build and strengthen families in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and across the UK and internationally
