Sunday 26th October 2014

Last Sunday after Trinity

Let us give thanks that, through the Holy Spirit, Jesus is with us now; let us hear afresh the words of scripture and pray that, through them, we may discern God’s purpose for us today; and let us rededicate our lives to faithful, active service.

10.00 am    Parish Eucharist

Hymns: 314, 219, 221 (verses 1, 4 & 5)
Psalm: 1
Communion: 81, 636, 114

First Reading     Leviticus 19:1-2 & 15-18
The Lord addresses Moses about holiness in the personal conduct of the people of Israel

Second Reading     1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
Paul reminds the Thessalonians that his mission to them had not been like other preachers who did it for profit, but under the gentle compulsion of the free Gospel of God.

Gospel     Matthew 22:34-46
Jesus turns the arguments of the Pharisees and Sadducees upside down. It was a radical challenge to their authority and to the respect they normally enjoyed. This passage contains the two great commandments of love, which Jesus quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures.

3.00 pm   Owlswick Choral Evensong
Readings: Ecclesiastes Ch. 11 & Ch. 12; 2 Timothy 2v 1-7
Hymns: 449, Psalm 119 v97-104, 456, 434, 453

Prayer for the Week
Your love, O God, is boundless. We who were strangers have been made your children.  We who were defenceless have been brought into your household.  Keep us mindful of you deeds of mercy, that we may love you with our whole heart and love our neighbour as ourselves.  We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

Your prayers are asked in the coming week for:

  • The Anglican Church of Ceylon
  • Those suffering the ravages of war and hatred, terrorism and injustice, especially in the Middle East
  • All who are ill with the Ebola virus and those caring for them
  • Those who develop new food technologies that we may be safe and wholesome
  • The vulnerable, elderly and infirm and others who benefit from the work of the Princes Centre
  • Those who live in Upper Icknield Way (MR) Jasmine Crescent & Lime Road (PR)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Matt Elworthy, Uncle Frank, Katy, Albert and Georgina Cole, Susan Parkin, Lynn Nicholls
  • The recently departed:
    • Joan Turnbull and Peter Robinson
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Janet Myerson, Harry Goode, Annie Harris

Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
The Princes Centre, assisting those in the locality who have mental health, learning or physical disabilities or who are elderly.

Thank you!
St Dunstan’s and St Peter’s raised an excellent £1,965 for the Bucks Historic Churches Trust – well done!
Thanks to all participants and all those who sponsored. Also a belated thank you to all of the donations of items and money for the work of the Whitechapel Mission for Harvest. The trailer was overflowing with goods and the money raised by St. Peter’s and St. Dunstan’s totalled almost £600.

‘Open House’, Monday October 27th at 8pm at the Rectory
Under the umbrella of “The Jesus lifestyle” we shall continue to look at a DVD about the radical teaching found in the Sermon on the Mount and apply it to the 21st century. The DVD last approximately 35 minutes and leaves plenty of time for discussion at the end. Everyone is welcome. James

St. Dunstan’s churchyard leaf sweep and maintenance
At 9.00 am on Saturday November 8th and Saturday December 6th we are looking to clear the fallen leaves from the churchyard and to carry out some general tasks such as pruning trees and maintaining paths. We can provide some tools but if you can bring any yourself that would be extremely helpful. James

Advent Fair – Saturday November 22nd (10 am – noon)

Please can you help with the following:
  • Items for Christmas Hamper. We are preparing a hamper for the main raffle prize. In the porch is a list of the items we need. Please sign the sheet and let Cathy Farquhar (343226) have your contributions by Sunday 16th November.
  • Please can you bring down by 9.30am on the day cakes and plants that can be sold
  • Small pots, bowls and baskets are required so that Ros Haigh (344166) and her team can plant bulbs in them as gifts to sell.
Thank you for all your help.

Churchyard Extension
Following the successful archaeological dig and landscaping the new area at the end of the churchyard is being prepared to be a wildflower meadow. We will be planting hedging, sowing seed and maintaining the boundary making a haven for wildlife and native species. If you would like to be involved in any of the area development, which will involve wildlife and bird projects along with the more traditional gardening I would love to put you on our emailing list for updates. Please contact me on 01844 342746 or susanne@sunfire-uk.com Thanks, Susanne.

Confirmation service at St. Dunstan’s
On Sunday November 23rd at 6 pm there will be a confirmation service at St. Dunstan’s led by the Bishop of Buckingham, Alan Wilson. Confirmation marks an important stage in the Christian journey and has often been the entry point to receive Holy Communion. There are separate preparation sessions for children and adults as below: children: 2.30-4.30 at The Rectory on Saturday November 8th and Saturday November 15th; adults: 10.00-11.30 at The Rectory on Friday November 7th and Friday November 14th.
There will be a rehearsal for candidates on Sunday November 23rd at 4.30pm which ought to leave plenty of time before the service itself starts at 6 pm. If you are interested in being confirmed please let James know.
