Sunday 22nd February 2015
1st Sunday of Lent

Today we hear how Jesus is driven out into the wilderness and tempted by Satan. Let us lift up our souls, our hearts and our minds to worship God who with steadfast love and compassion holds us, understands our needs and guides us in the ways of righteousness and faithfulness.

10.00am Parish Eucharist
Hymns: 343, 144, 32
Psalm: 25 v1-9
Communion hymns: 610, 69, 945
Anthem: Hide not thou thy face, O God (R. Farrant)

First Reading
  Genesis 9:8-17
God establishes an everlasting covenant with Noah and his descendants that he will never again destroy all living creatures on earth because of the wrongdoing of men and women.

Second Reading 1 Peter 3:18-end
Peter tells us that although our sin separates us from God we are saved from that separation by baptism into new life, made possible by Christ’s willing sacrifice of his own life and his resurrection from the dead by the power of God.

Gospel Mark 1:9-15
The Holy Spirit who, at his baptism, descends on Jesus like a dove, now drives him out into a wilderness time of trial and temptation before he can begin his public ministry of proclaiming that the kingdom of God is near.

3.00pm Evensong (St. Peter’s Chapel, Owlswick)
Readings: Genesis 2 v 15-17 & 3 v 1-7; Romans 5 v 12-19
Hymns: 76, Psalm 119, 414, 70, 420

Prayer for the week
God of the covenant, as the forty days of deluge swept away the world’s corruption and watered new beginnings of righteousness and life, so in the saving flood of baptism your people are washed clean and born again.  Throughout these forty days, we beg you, unseal for us the wellspring of your grace, cleanse our hearts of all that is not holy, and cause your gift of new life to flourish once again.  Grant this through Christ our liberator from sin, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God for ever and ever. Amen

Your prayers are asked in the coming week for:

  • Those persecuted for their faith, that they may be strengthened and upheld by the Holy Spirit; remembering especially the Coptic Christians murdered in Libya this week
  • Those parts of the world where there is conflict and violence, especially for Ukraine and Syria: that the leaders of the nations be led in the ways of peace, justice and reconciliation.
  • School governors and the responsibility that they carry for the life of our schools
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of St. Teresa’s Roman Catholic Church, Princes Risborough
  • Pursell Place (PR) Monkton Waye & Cornerways (Sp)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Joan Male, Bill Male, Alastair, Uncle Frank, Katy, Albert and Georgina Cole, Gillian Brady
  • The recently departed:
    • Rev. Dave Lawton, Ray Ingram, David Whitehead
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • David Brewer, Beryl Boyce, Evelyn How, Enid Clack, Muriel Birrell and Doreen Roberts

Worship Group Update
Lent sees the introduction of the final booklet in our series of seasonal booklets. The front cover is very striking and the whole booklet will hopefully be an aid to worship during this season. Work is currently being undertaken to update the booklet for the All Age Family Service and a new mass setting in addition to the existing Addington setting is being considered for possible introduction later this year. You can listen to this on http://www.culvermusic.com/trinity-mass.html If you have any comments please let James know.

Lent 2015
Two courses are on offer this year. The first course is on the Apocrypha, the set of books that sits between the Old and New Testament in some Bibles. There is the choice of a one day workshop in the church hall on Saturday 28th February from 10.00am—4.00pm. Drinks will be provided but please bring your own packed lunch. Alternatively four sessions will be held on Wednesday mornings, from 10.30 – 12 noon, starting on 4th March and now IN THE CHURCH HALL. There is a leaflet on the table giving further information. Please complete and return the tear off slip for this by TODAY to Rob or James.
The second course is based on ‘Spiritual Journeys’. This is being organised by Churches Together in Risborough and takes place on Tuesday evenings in March at Costa Coffee in Princes Risborough from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. Further details can be found on the notice board. James.
There are also some free booklets for Lent called ‘Love life, live Lent’ available on the table by the south door for those who wish to mark Lent in a practical/active way.

Vacancies on the PCC and Deanery Synod
There will be two vacancies on the church council (PCC) and one on the Deanery Synod that need to be filled at the Annual Meetings on Monday April 27th. If you are interested in the decision making process and day to day running of St. Dunstan’s or St. Peter’s, have an interest in the wider workings of the Church and you have been on the electoral roll for six months, please let James know if you wish to fill one of these important vacancies. The PCC meets nine times a year on Monday evening and the Deanery Synod three times per year.

Save the dates!
