Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

Today we hear Jesus telling his disciples that nothing must distract them or hinder them on their journey into the eternal kingdom of God. Let us offer our praise and thanksgiving to God, who is our strength and our redeemer.

First Reading Esther 7:1-6 & 9-10; 9:20-22

By petitioning King Ahasuerus Esther is able to prevent the holocaust of the Jewish people which had been plotted by Haman, who is then put to death on gallows he built to hang the Jewish Mordecai, a guardian of Esther.

Second Reading James 5:13-end

James encourages his brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for one another in faith and to seek healing and forgiveness for their sins also through prayer.

Gospel Mark 9:38-end

Jesus teaches his disciples that the kingdom of God must have first and central place in their lives and they must not allow themselves to be distracted from kingdom work, no matter what they have to sacrifice in order to do that.

Prayer of the week
Pour out your Spirit, O God, over all the world to inspire every heart with knowledge and love of you. Grant that we who confess Jesus as Lord may shun whatever is contrary to this faith and give us witness to your love, that has saved us in Christ, for he lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Proposed parking restrictions in Mill Lane
Thank you to everyone who expressed their views regarding proposals to change parking arrangements within and around Princes Risborough which included no waiting restrictions in Mill Lane that would have been very damaging to the life of St. Dunstan’s. Bucks County Council will be holding a public meeting on Monday 28th September at 7 pm in the Elim Church Hall (formerly Royal British Legion Building) in Bell Street, Princes Risborough at 7pm to discuss the results from their recent consultation on residents parking.  All residents are welcome. Upgrading of Heating and Installation of New Boiler
Starting on Monday September 28th with completion due by Friday October 2nd work will be undertaken to install some new radiators and a new boiler. The disruption should be minimal as the work will take place between the two weekends although the 9.30 am Holy Communion service on Thursday and Morning Prayer on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8.45 will take place at The Rectory, Mill Lane. ‘Open House’, Thursday October 1st at 8pm at the Rectory
Under the umbrella of “The Jesus lifestyle” we shall continue to look at a DVD about the radical teaching found in the Sermon on the Mount and apply it to the 21st century. The DVD lasts approximately 35 minutes and leaves plenty of time for discussion at the end. Everyone is welcome. James

Harvest Festival Services and the Whitechapel Mission
As in previous years we are delighted to accept your donations for the work of the Whitechapel Mission at our before the Harvest services at Owlswick on Sunday September 27th at 6 pm and St. Dunstan’s on Sunday October 4th at 11 am. The Whitechapel Mission provides hot food and drink, showers, clothing, free toilets and the chance of a wash and brush-up to homeless people in London. To enable its work to continue please log on to their website www.whitechapelmission.org.uk, click on ‘donate’ and scroll down to ‘donations in kind’ for a list of the things most desperately needed.  Harvest Lunch
This takes place on Sunday 4th October from 12 noon onwards at the Scout Hall, Courtmoor Close off Mill Lane, Monks Risborough. Tickets are 6.00 per adult and children under 18 £1.00, available from Pat Kimber at Church or by telephoning 01844 273942. A list is up in the porch for people to sign up to help with setting up or providing puddings. 

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday October 5th at 8pm:
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to the church hall for these meetings of any faith or none. For further information please contact James

Quiz to raise funds for St. Peter's, Owlswick
This will take place on Saturday 10th October at Orchard View Farm, Little Meadle starting at 7pm and includes a curry supper. Teams of up to 6 people are £12 per head (please bring your own drinks if required). To book please ring Jane Rogers on 01844 347906 or  email rogers.owlswick@waitrose.com

Signed Harvest Festival, Sunday October 11th at 3.00pm
Organised by the Oxford Diocesan Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, everyone is warmly invited to this service. There will be a loop system, Power-point presentation of the service and lip speaker. Please bring gifts of fruit, vegetables and other produce for a Harvest Auction.  Refreshments will be available afterwards.

Confirmation Sessions and Service
A confirmation class for adults and children is being held at the Rectory on Saturday October 17th and Saturday October 24th from 2.30-4.30pm. The Confirmation service itself will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Bledlow on Sunday November 1st at 6pm. If you would like to consider being confirmed please contact James. Confirmation is often seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion as a person ‘confirms’ the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism.

A prayer for the refugee crisis
God of compassion, whose own son experienced life as a refugee, we remember those fleeing from danger, hungry and afraid, with nowhere to call home. God, we ask for their warmth, security, food and peace.
God of hope, we thank you for those who are working to bring relief and comfort to those displaced, showing glimpses of grace in the darkness of despair. God, give them strength.
God of justice, guide the nations and the leaders of the world towards peace, stir hearts to be generous and compassionate. God, help us to play our part in bringing about the change that we want to see. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
