Welcome!

We hope you will enjoy worshipping here with us.
Please see our welcome leaflet on the table for all of our services and activities. There is a corner for children to colour and play during the 10 am service. Coffee, squash and biscuits are served in the church hall after the service.

Sunday 31st July

Tenth Sunday after Trinity

“If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above”. God can lift us out of our earthly concerns, renew us in the things of heaven and help us lead lives that witness to peace and justice. Let us open our hearts to God in prayer, praise and thanksgiving.

10.00am Parish Communion

Hymns: 552, 572, 217
Psalm: 107 v1-7
Communion: 381, 543, 972
Anthem: ‘Day by Day’ by Martin How

First Reading Hosea 11:1-11
Israel is unfaithful and ungrateful, but God loves his people. God will not execute his anger on them, but will return them to their homes.

Second Reading Colossians 3:1-11
Life in Christ demands a change in orientation from the earthly to the heavenly. Such a life enables a new order, in which “Christ is all and in all”, to be born on earth.

Gospel Luke 12:13-21
Jesus warns of the cost of materialism – self-centredness, separation from society and isolation from God. Earthly treasures are a delusion.

4.30pm Cream Teas, Owlswick

6.00pm Songs of Praise, Owlswick with the Bishop of Buckingham (see notices)

Prayer of the Week
O God, the giver of every gift that endures, only by your grace can we rightly understand the wonder of life and why it is given. By the word of your Son challenge our foolishness, confront our greed, and shape our lives to the wisdom of the Gospel. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked for:

  • The victims of all recent terrorist attacks and atrocities
  • All killed as a result of civil war and other disturbances
  • Those displaced from their homes and now living as refugees
  • The people and government of Turkey, that there may be a just, peaceful and democratic solution to the upheaval there
  • The safety and refreshment of those on holiday
  • All confused by technology, both young and old, who feel useless in the modern world and its reliance on gadgets
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of Kimble Free Church.
  • Icknield Court Nursing Home (PR) The Old School House (L)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Katy, Georgina Cole, Robert, Dave Skinner
  • The recently departed:
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Robert Shephard, Jack Barraclough, Robin Stoddart, John Parish
Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
The Whitechapel Mission is dedicated to providing a lifeline to men and women caught in the cycles of poverty, hopelessness and dependencies of many kinds, and to see their lives transformed to hope, joy and lasting productivity. www.whitechapel.org.uk.

Sustaining the Sacred Centre
As part of this initiative there are various opportunities to try different forms of prayer during August. A leaflet is available on the table towards the back of the church giving more details. Please take some time out during August to come to one or more of these services. James and Rob

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday August 1st, 8 pm church hall
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. Each meeting lasts about 45 minutes. The meeting starts with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. James

Ann Tomkins successfully completed her tandem skydive on Sunday 24th July for PACE.  It’s no too late to sponsor her.   You can do this through just giving: https://www.justgiving.com/Ann-Tomkins or there is a sponsorship form on the table at the back of church

Fellowship Group

On August 11th at 8 pm in the church hall we have our very own Rose Williams speaking about her work as a hospital chaplain. Everyone is very welcome.

Open House at the Rectory – The Pilgrim Course
This course is open to everyone for a single session or the whole course. On Wednesday August 17th at 8 pm we shall be looking at the questions in the Baptism service ‘Do you renounce evil’? James

St. Albans Cathedral Pilgrimage

Owing to popular demand there will be a second pilgrim tour of St. Albans Abbey on Wednesday September 28th. Leaving by coach from the lay-by off the A4010 in Monks Risborough at 5.30 pm, the evening starts with a sandwich and cake buffet in the Abbot’s kitchen at 7 pm. This is followed by a Pilgrimage Prayer Trail around the Cathedral, Compline by candlelight in the Quire, before concluding with a silent procession to the Shrine of Saint Alban. We will return to the lay-by in Monks Risborough at about 10.15pm. The cost for the St. Albans trip is £17.50. If you would like to book a place please contact Rev James Tomkins jamestomkins@btinternet.com (01844 275944) and send your money with cheques payable to ‘Monks Risborough PCC’ to the Rectory, Mill Lane, Monks Risborough, HP27 9JE. A few spaces have recently become available for the trip to Ely cathedral on August 10th. Please let James know if you would like to come.

Confirmation
Confirmation is often seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion as a person ‘confirms’ the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism. Whatever age you are, if you’re interested in taking this step in your Christian journey please speak with James as it’s likely that there will be an opportunity to attend a confirmation service in the area in September.

St. Nicholas Church, Kingsey
This summer work begins to remount the embroideries of the beautiful white altar frontal. The work is being carried out by Elizabeth Bond, a graduate of the Royal School of Needlework. Everyone is welcome to visit the church and see the work in progress. For a list of times and dates when the church will be open, please see the note in the church porch.
