Sunday 14th August
Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

Our Lord offers us fullness of life as we respond to God’s call to faith and fruitfulness. So let us use the grace of this day to come to God, eager to worship and ready to serve.

10.00am Parish Communion
Hymns: 755, 209, 97, 511
Communion: 77, 304, 938

First Reading Isaiah 5:1-7
Isaiah prophesies judgement on God’s wayward people Israel. Unresponsive to God’s tending, they are as fruitless as a failed vineyard. The Lord will withdraw provision and protection.

Second Reading Hebrews 11:29 – 12:2
Faith sustained God’s people through triumphs and trials, before they knew God’s promises fulfilled in Christ. We follow their example in the light of Christ’s coming.

Gospel Luke 12:49-56
Jesus warns that his mission entails a judgement that will divide even families. He urges his hearers to recognise and heed the signs of impending crisis.
11.30pm Owlswick Holy Communion (BCP)
Readings: Isaiah 5 v 1-7, Luke 12 v 49-56

6.00pm Evensong
Readings: Isaiah 28 v 9-22 & 2 Corinthians 8 v 1-9
Hymns: 616, Psalm 119 v17-24, 96, 188

Prayer of the Week

To set the earth ablaze, O God, your Son submitted to a baptism unto death, and from his cup of suffering you call the Church to drink. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and give us strength in time of trial to run the race that lies before us. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked for:

  • The successful holding of the Olympic Games in Brazil and for all of the preparations for the Paralympics afterwards
  • Those trapped in the city of Aleppo, those working to bring essential aid and those working to bring peace
  • All victims of physical, sexual or mental abuse
  • The safety and refreshment of those on holiday
  • The workforce of hotels and those on low wages that they may be properly cared for by employers
  • The Women’s Institutes in Risborough and Bledlow and other organizations for women.
  • Westmead (PR) Manor Close (B)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Katy, Georgina Cole, Robert, Dave Skinner, Henry
  • The recently departed: Myra Ballantyne
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Brian Pechey, Marie Drury, Ruth Bartlett, Stanley Baldwin, Ted Light, Shana Stonell

Bucks Arts Week
We have now received the commission cheque from the various exhibitors and you’ll be pleased to know that the amount raised was over £2,800. Combined with the cream teas (£800) this has given a significant boost to church finances and helped to promote St. Dunstan’s as an attractive place of hospitality and welcome. James

The Friendship Group
We meet in the church hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.30 pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 17th August. All welcome

Open House at the Rectory – The Pilgrim Course
This course is open to everyone for a single session or the whole course. On Wednesday August 17th at 8 pm we shall be looking at the question in the Baptism service ‘Do you renounce evil’? James

St. Albans Cathedral Pilgrimage
Owing to popular demand there will be a second pilgrim tour of St. Albans Abbey on Wednesday September 28th. The coach will leave from the lay-by off the A4010 in Monks Risborough at 5.30 pm and return there at about 10.15pm. Full details can be found in the August/September edition of the newsletter.

Confirmation
Confirmation is often seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion as a person ‘confirms’ the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism. There will be a confirmation service at St. Mary’s on Sunday September 18th at 6.00pm. Whatever age you are, if you’re interested in taking this step in your Christian journey please speak with James.

Free entry to Westminster Abbey – worth up to £80!
I have again secured a pass to enable up to four people to visit the Abbey free of charge. If you have visitors over the summer period or wish to enjoy a visit yourself please let me know and you can make use of this pass. James
