Sunday 28th August
Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity

Today’s readings invite us to look deep into the meaning of hospitality, recognising its place at the heart of the kingdom of God. Our place in it depends on God’s infinite and generous hospitality, and we are called to reflect that same hospitality in our relationships with others.

10.00am Parish Communion
Hymns: 382, 489, 572, 19
Prayers: 931
Communion: 610, 540

First Reading Jeremiah 2:4-13
Here we glimpse God’s agony at being abandoned by the people of Israel. They exchange God’s faithful, passionate love for false gods who do not even exist.

Second Reading Hebrews 13:1-8 & 15-16
Here is some practical instruction about how to live the life of faith. We learn what it means for all our relationships, both those most intimate and those more distant.

Gospel Luke 14:1 & 7-14
Jesus tells two parables that call us to examine our hearts and see what place humility has within us.

2.30pm Naming and blessing service

6.00pm Owlswick Evensong
Readings: Isaiah 33 v 13-22, John 3 v 22-36
Hymns: 431, Psalm 119v 81-88, 146, 463, 461

Prayer of the Week
God and judge of all, you show us that the way to your kingdom is through humility and service. Keep us true to the path of justice and give us the reward promised to those who make a place for the rejected and the poor. We ask this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Your prayers are asked for:

  • The victims of the earthquake in Italy: for all those who have died, been left homeless, injured or bereaved
  • The peace of the world in places like Turkey, Syria and Iraq following further violence and indiscriminate killings
  • All those receiving exam results this summer and for their next steps in education, training or work
  • Those who lead and organise adventurous holidays, for the thrills and safety of exciting and challenging activities
  • The Bledlow Belles and Bledlow Village Fete Committee
  • Westfields (MR) Long Hide (PR), Lower Icknield Way (L)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Katy, Georgina Cole, Robert, Dave Skinner, Henry
  • The recently departed:
    • Barbara Neaves, Vicki McKenzie, Dereck Ridgway
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Roy Pearce, Harry Purver, Bill Greaves, Mary Ann Copcutt, Phyllis Gibbons

Please remember the charities that the parish supports:

Whatever age you are, if you’re interested in taking this step in your Christian journey please speak with James.
