Sunday 10th December 2017

Second Sunday of Advent

Mark’s Gospel begins with a bold announcement of good news that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The readings and prayers today invite us to share that same excitement in the transforming power of Christ and to live, as well as proclaim, the good news.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading Isaiah 40:1-11
Most scholars see this as the beginning of a new section in Isaiah, written to God’s people in exile. The words offer comfort and assurance that God, having judged them, will save them

Second Reading 2 Peter 3:8-15a
The author addresses a real concern in the early Church: Jesus had not returned. God’s time is different from human time, and the passage offers instruction about how to live as we wait.

Gospel Mark 1:1-8
Mark does not have a lengthy narrative of Jesus’ birth. Instead, he plunges into the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Everything that follows in his Gospel is an explanation of his vibrant opening.

Hymns 128, 480, 282
Psalm 85
Communion 949, 263, 399
Anthem: Advent Message (Martin How)

11:30am Owlswick Holy Communion

First Reading Isaiah 40.1-11

Gospel Mark 1.1-8

6:00pm Evensong

First Reading 1 Kings 22.1-28

Second Reading Romans 15.4-13

Hymns 265, 447, 128
Psalm 40:14-21

Prayer of the Week
With tender comfort and transforming power you come into our midst, O God of mercy and might. Make ready a way in the wilderness, clear a straight path in our hearts, and form us into a repentant people, that the advent of your Son may find us watchful and eager for the glory he reveals. We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near: your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Peace in the Middle East following President Trump’s controversial policy shift

  • Britain and Europe in the next stages of negotiations regarding Brexit
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of the Methodist Church, Princes Risborough
  • Walkers Road and Walnut Crescent (L) Cross Lane and Hinton Crossing (B)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
