First Sunday of Advent


Today is the first Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the Church’s year. Today we begin the season of anticipation and preparation for the coming of our saviour, Jesus Christ.

Prayer of the Week
Almighty God, as your kingdom dawns, turn us from the darkness of sin to the light of holiness, that we may be ready to meet you in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Rohingya Muslims and others facing persecution; for a greater understanding between people of different faiths and political persuasion
  • A constructive relationships and dialogue between North Korea, the United States, the United Nations and the rest of the international community  
  • Organisations which assist the disabled, especially Scope, PACE and other local charities

Advent Fair
Thank you to everyone involved in making this a hugely enjoyable and successful occasion. There was a steady flow of people throughout the morning and £900 was been raised for church funds.

Monks Risborough School Nativity
The infant school will be presenting “Lights, Camel Action” to the community on Wednesday December 6th at 10:30am. The school would be delighted if you could attend. If you are interested in coming please contact Miranda in the school office on 345590 or office@mrisborough.bucks.sch.uk  Thank you

Fellowship Cheese and Wine Christmas Party
This takes place on December 14th at 8.00pm in the church hall. This includes some carol-singing, a festive quiz and only costs £3. Everyone is very welcome.

Carol Singing around the village
On Thursday December 21st meeting in St. Dunstan’s Church at 6.00 pm everyone is invited to come carol singing around the village with the church choir to help raise money for charity. Afterwards refreshments will be served. If you enjoy singing please come along – singers of all standards are welcome!

Coffee and Mince Pies at the Rectory
As in the past everyone is invited for coffee and mince pies at The Rectory after the 10.00am Communion service on Sunday December 31st. Even if you don’t come to the service you are very welcome!

National Gallery Tour – Saturday 27th January 11 am
This has already ‘sold out’. If you would be interested in booking a place on another tour, please let Susanne Carr know 346827 or susannecarr2168@aol.com and she will organise a second tour if there is sufficient interest. James

Colds, coughs…
Polite reminder – so that we all stay as healthy as possible, if you have a cold etc. please ask the priest to dip your wafer into the communion cup (known as intinction) to reduce the risk of spreading germs. Thank you. James

Stretching Classes

Susanne Carr writes: A fantastic new stretching class takes place in the White Cross Hall on Wednesdays 9.30 - 10.30am, £6 pay as you go, no signing up. The first-rate teacher gives individual care and attention, combining Yoga, Pilates and stretching, all controlled, gentle and slow. Bring a mat and see how your flexibility improves!

Some of our Christmas services explained:

Nine Lessons and Carols, December 17th at 6 pm: A traditional service of readings and carols sung by the choir, congregation and Monks Risborough School.

Crib Service, December 24th at 3pm: It’s a chance for young children (and adults!) to get dressed up as their favourite character in the nativity story, to sing some carols and to listen to the Christmas story being retold

Village Carol service, December 24th at 6 pm: An opportunity to celebrate Christmas with plenty of carols along with readings, reflections and prayers.

First Communion of Christmas, December 24th at 11.30 pm: A special service of Communion in the still of the night that recaptures the significance of the birth of Jesus.

Family All Age Christmas Communion, December 25th at 10.00 am: A chance to celebrate the birth of Jesus in an informal but meaningful way
