Sunday 21st October

Twenty-first Sunday after Trinity

Today Jesus teaches his disciples that before they can be with him in glory they must follow in his footsteps as servants of one another and suffer as Jesus himself will suffer. So let us worship God the Father who raised Jesus from the dead to reign with him in glory.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Isaiah 53 v 4-end
God’s suffering servant will be treated unjustly but will delight in the many who are made righteous through him.

Second Reading: Hebrews 5 v 1-10
Jesus is appointed by God to be our high priest through his obedient suffering, which also brings salvation to others.

Gospel: Mark 10 v 35-45
Status in God’s kingdom is found only through sacrificial love and service and is freely given by God: it cannot be earned.

Hymns: 551, 536, 474
Psalm 91v9-end
Communion: 289, 533, 610
Anthem: O taste and see, R. Vaughan Williams

6.00pm Evensong

Second Reading: Matthew 12 v 1-21
Hymns: 686, 537, 638 Psalm 141

Prayer of the Week

Most glorious God, in Jesus you show us that your will is to save. Grant to us your people the boldness to desire a place in your kingdom, the courage to drink the cup of suffering, and the grace to find in service the glory you promise. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

Silent Prayer Meeting, Monday October 22nd at 8 pm
We need silence to help us to get a proper perspective on our lives; to hear the still, small voice of God, and to refresh our inner being. All are welcome to these meetings of any faith or none. Each meeting lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. The meeting starts with some simple relaxation exercises, a short passage from the Bible to reflect upon in the half hour of silence, followed by a time of sharing of our experiences if people wish. James

    Dying Matters
Talking about death, dying and funerals raises big questions that it’s helpful to face at some point, but it can be hard to talk to family and friends. On Saturday October 27th and Wednesday October 31st there is an opportunity to come along to a session from 10am to 12 noon at 17 Wellington Avenue, Princes Risborough (home of Revs. Steve and Rose Williams) to think, chat and articulate these questions in a relaxed environment. A series of question cards are used to encourage conversations and to listen to others’ perspectives and experiences in small groups. The sessions are open for people of all faiths, doubts and none. To book a place on one of these sessions please contact Rev James Tomkins jamestomkins@btinternet.com 01844 275944 stating your preferred date.

Volunteers required for churchyard leaf sweep

Family Bonfire Night suitable for All Ages

    ‘Journey’s End’ (12) on Saturday November 10th, 7pm

Fabric Projects at St. Dunstan’s and St. Peter’s
In the next few months we hope to undertake a number of projects. These include the redecoration of the whole church; the conservation of the pulpit; the conservation of the tin arch at St. Peter’s; repairs to the stonework, protecting the path past the church hall to the churchyard and repairing the path from the bell tower to the churchyard. We hope to meet the cost of these projects through existing funds, legacies and previous fund raising activities. Longer term we are looking to create additional toilets at the back of the church hall to cope with the large number of visitors that come to events, funerals, weddings and other services at St. Dunstan’s. James
