Sunday 16th October 2011

The 17th Sunday after Trinity

We live in a world which often fails to acknowledge God; a world which can, at times, be hostile to faith.  Let us come together today to seek God’s strength so we can stand firm.  For, through Jesus God knows exactly what it’s like to live in a hostile world.

Today

10.00 am   Parish Eucharist (Addington Setting)

Readings

First Reading                Isaiah 45: 1-7
The time had come for God to end the exile of his people in Babylon.  To do this he was raising up Cyrus, King of Persia, to crush the Babylonian Empire.

Second Reading           1 Thessalonians 1 v 1-10
Paul greets the Thessalonian church at the start of his letter by expressing thanksgiving for their faith and praising their endurance.

Gospel Reading            Matthew 22: 15-22
Jesus’ teaching implied that many of those originally invited to be part of God’s kingdom would be found lacking.  The Pharisees realised that this teaching was directed at them and they were furious.

6.00pm             Choral Evensong with St Mary’s
Readings: Proverbs 4 v 1-18, 1 John 3 v 16 - Ch 4 v 6 Hymns: 70, Psalm 142, 673, 688

Prayer for the week
O God, whose image we bear and whose name we carry, yours is the world and all it contains.  Recall us to our true allegiance, so that above the powers and rulers of this world you alone may claim our fullest loyalty and love.  We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

Your prayers are asked this week for:

·        Peace in the world following fresh waves of violence and protest in Libya, Syria and Tunisia
·        The Anglican Church in Australia
·        The policing of drunken behaviour and those who are the victims of binge drinking.
·        Those who work in the furniture industry: Ercol, Hypnos and other companies
·        Residents of Mead Acre and Mead Close (MR) Claydon Place (Longwick) & Clifford Rd (PR)
·        Those in need who are known in our parish:
·        and also further afield for:
Gordon Haynes; Christine; Deborah Ryley; Joan Male; Richard Irvine; Emma, Matt and Olivia; Sarah and Matt; Richard Farrelly, Sally Maddox, Dewis Smith
·        For the recently departed:
 Peter Donald
·        Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time particularly:
 Madeleine Randall
Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
Rope (Relief for Oppressed People Everywhere), combating oppressive poverty across the world and striving to change the lives of the poor.
