Sunday 23rd October 2011

The Last Sunday after Trinity

Welcome, come through the open door of God’s house and find yourselves truly at home.  We come together to express our love for God and to bring our prayers of sorrow and of joy.  As we worship may we be refreshed and energised to live as Christ would have us live.

Readings

First Reading                Leviticus 19: 1-2, 15-18
The reading picks out the call of the people of Israel to love God with all their heart, and sets out a framework of behaviour towards their neighbours.

Second Reading           1 Thessalonians 2: 1-8
Paul recalls his first trip to Thessalonica as an agent of the Gospel of Christ.  He recalls how he arrived after a disastrous visit to Philippi and how he approached them openly and with great gentleness.

Gospel Reading            Matthew 22: 34-46
In the middle of a pitched battle with the leaders of religious society, Jesus confounds questions designed to trick him and directly attacks their hypocrisy.  It is all a precursor of greater conflict to come.

3.00pm Owlswick Evensong
Readings: Isaiah 55:1-11, Luke 4: 14-30
Hymns: 466, Psalm 119 v 89-96, 407, 410, 245
Prayer for the week
Your love, O God, is boundless. We who were strangers have been made your children.  We who were defenceless have been brought into your household.  Keep us mindful of you deeds of mercy, that we may love you with our whole heart and love our neighbour as ourselves.  We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  •  the peoples of Libya as they face a new situation and new problems in their country
