Sunday 15th July 2012

6th Sunday after Trinity

Today we hear of the integrity and courage of John the Baptist who remains true to his calling even when imprisoned and his life in danger.  Let us praise God for his faithfulness to us and thank him for the many blessing and gifts we receive from him in Christ Jesus

10.00 am   Parish Eucharist (Addington Setting)

Hymns: 382, 413, 695
Psalm: 85: 8- end
Communion hymns: 381, 412, 932
Anthem: The true and living bread (D. Blackwell)

First Reading                Amos 7: 7-15
Amos asserts that he is not a “paid” prophet who has to earn his bread.  Rather he is a prophet called by God to leave his farming work in order to prophesy to the people of Israel.

Second Reading           Ephesians 1: 3-14
Paul praises God for all the blessings he has shown us and the gifts he offers us in and through Christ Jesus.

Gospel Reading             Mark 6: 14-29
We hear the story of the execution of John the Baptist on the orders of Herod Antipas.

6.00pm Evensong
Readings: Job 4v1, 5v6-end; Romans 15:14-29
Hymns:   636, Psalm 66:1-8, 262, 281

Prayer for the Week
God of justice, God of salvation, from every land you call a people to yourself. Yours is the work we do, yours the message we carry.  Keep your Church single-minded and faithful to you.  Let failure not discourage us nor success beguile our heats, as you send us to proclaim the Gospel.  We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • all of the preparations for Lighthouse starting next Sunday
  • peace-makers and peace-keepers amidst further killings in Syria and other countries around the world
  • those affected by floods, at home and abroad
  • Computer and Software retailers for the service they provide to the home user.
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of St John’s Church, Lacey Green.
  • Residents of Kings Oak Close & Long Meadow Close (MR), Church Lane & Church St (PR)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  • and also further afield for:
    • Gordon Haynes, Joan Male, Richard Irvine
  • The recently departed:
    • Sally Maddox
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time particularly:
    • Flora Hartle, Jim Tweedie, David Morris.

Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
Parents and Children Together (PACT), working to build and strengthen families in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and across the UK and internationally

Request from Lighthouse
Every year 15 Lighthouse Volunteers stay behind after the day’s events to prepare & conduct evening entertainment for the older children called ‘Fiesta’. These volunteers do not have time to go home and get themselves an evening meal and have relied on takeaways to keep them going. This year we would like to ask if each of the Churches in Risborough could undertake to provide a hot meal for these 15 volunteers on one of the following evenings:
Monday 23rd / Weds 25th / Thurs 25th / Friday 27th. Please could you reply to Kathryn Trout at St. Mary’s Parish Office: parishoffice@stmarysrisborough.org.uk if you can help with one or more of these dates and she will then be able to coordinate and provide further information to those cooking the meals – there are no vegetarians! Many thanks

Later Youth Group 22nd July 6.00pm – 9.00pm
The group will meet at Lighthouse Commissioning Service (top school playing fields), followed by BBQ and games at 26 Summerleys Rd.  See James or email revdjimtaylor@gmail.com

Are you interested in becoming a school governor?
A vacancy will exist to be a church ‘foundation’ governor at Monks Risborough School from the autumn term. This is a very valuable role in helping to manage the school and there are a variety of areas that an individual can specialise in such as finance, health and safety, curriculum or personnel for example. There are two main meetings each term together with other meetings depending on your level of involvement with the school. If you are interested in finding out more please speak with James (275944) or Sue Ingram (275287)

Do you need transport to and from church on a Sunday morning?
We have a small group of volunteers who are able to provide lifts to and from church on a Sunday morning on either a one-off basis or something more regular.  If you feel this would be useful to you please telephone Cathy Farquhar (343226) or David Kemp in her absence (344097) to discuss options.  For this to run smoothly, Cathy will need to know if lifts are required by Friday tea time each week.

Learning opportunities in the Oxford Diocese

For those who are interested I have put details of some training courses on the notice board that are being offered in the autumn term in the Oxford Diocese. These cover such areas as leading intercessions, an introduction to preaching and ethics. James

Confirmation Service, Sunday November 25th at 6.30 pm at St. Mary’s, Princes Risborough
This is an occasion when children, teenagers or adults decide for themselves to affirm their Christian faith and is traditionally seen as the entry point to receive Holy
Communion.  A course to prepare candidates for this will start after the summer holidays. Please speak to James if you (or your children) are interested in exploring this further.

Flower Festival 2013 – ‘Saints Preserve us’!
The revised date for this is June 28th to July 1st. This will be a fantastic celebration of floral displays depicting the history of the saints down the ages. More details to follow with plenty of opportunities for volunteers to help.
