Welcome!

We hope you will enjoy worshipping here with us.
Junior Church (10 o’clock Club) starts again on Sept 9th.
There are colouring sheets and toys in the corner of the church for the children during the 10.00 am service.
Please join us for refreshments in the Church Hall immediately after the 10.00am service.

Sunday 29th July 2012

8th Sunday after Trinity
Jesus is the bread of life.  As we come to him today let us seek nourishment for our souls and willingly offer our lives in his service.

10.00 am   Parish Eucharist (Addington Setting)

Hymns: 13, 114, 252
Psalm: 145: 9-21
Communion hymns: 81, 374 & 379

First Reading                2 Kings 4: 42-end
Elisha has a choice. As a man of God he is given the first fruits of the harvest and could have kept the food to himself. His response to the gift however is to share it with those in need, and so God blesses it.

Second Reading           Ephesians 3:14- 21
Paul’s amazing prayer is for us to have inner strength and spiritual vision: that Christ will be central in our lives and that we will know his energy working through us in a way we can barely imagine.

Gospel Reading             John 6: 1-21
In John’s version of the feeding of the five thousand the presence and direction of Jesus are emphasised far more than in the other Gospels. Aware of the Passover’s nearness, he nourishes the crown on different levels, physical provision prefiguring spiritual self-offering.

6.00pm             Choral Evensong, Owlswick
Readings: Job 19: 1-27a, Hebrews 8
Hymns:   377, Psalm 74: 11-16, 410, 499, 420

Prayer for the Week

O God, you open wide your hand, giving us food in due season. Out of your never-failing abundance, satisfy the hungers of body and soul and lead all peoples of the earth to the feast of the world to come.  We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The successful hosting of the Olympic Games. For all those competing, watching, working or reporting on the Games
  • an end to violence in the world, especially in Syria
  • all those affected by the current economic climate
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of our own churches, St Dunstan’s and St Peters.
  • Residents of Westmead (MR), Longwick Rd (PR  & L)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  • and also further afield for:
    • Gordon Haynes, Joan Male, Richard Irvine
  • The recently departed:
    • Noel Bartlett, Fiona Kent
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time particularly:
    • Ian Stanford, Daniel Shir, Margaret Ashby, Collette Milllican, Robert Sheppard.

Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
Tearfund, working in partnership with Christian agencies and churches worldwide to tackle the causes and effects of poverty.

Confirmation Service, Sunday November 25th at 6.30 pm at St. Mary’s, Princes Risborough
This is an occasion when children, teenagers or adults decide for themselves to affirm their Christian faith and is traditionally seen as the entry point to receive Holy Communion.  A course to prepare candidates for this will start after the summer holidays. Please speak to James if you (or your children) are interested in exploring this further.

Bucks Open Studios
We have now received the commission cheque from all of the exhibitors with a final total of over £1000. Combined with the money taken from the cream teas, this event has raised around £1600 this time! Well done and thank you to everyone involved.

Choir vestry carpet removal
On Monday July 30th the carpet in the choir vestry is being taken up as it is damp and mouldy. The floor will then be left uncovered for a while to allow it to dry out as we decide how or if it should be covered again. Please take extra care when going into the vestry as the surface may be uneven. James

Are you interested in becoming a school governor?
A vacancy will exist to be a church ‘foundation’ governor at Monks Risborough School from the autumn term. This is a very valuable role in helping to manage the school and there are a variety of areas that an individual can specialise in such as finance, health and safety, curriculum or personnel for example. There are two main meetings each term together with other meetings depending on your level of involvement with the school. If you are interested in finding out more please speak with James (275944) or Sue Ingram (275287).

Do you need transport to and from church on a Sunday morning?
We have a small group of volunteers who are able to provide lifts to and from church on a Sunday morning on either a one-off basis or something more regular.  If you feel this would be useful to you please telephone Cathy Farquhar (343226) or David Kemp in her absence (344097) to discuss options.  For this to run smoothly, Cathy will need to know if lifts are required by Friday tea time each week.

Learning opportunities in the Oxford Diocese
For those who are interested I have put details of some training courses on the notice board that are being offered in the autumn term in the Oxford Diocese. These cover such areas as leading intercessions, an introduction to preaching and ethics. James
