Sunday 18th Nov 2012

2nd Sunday before Advent

We come before our heavenly Father, as we await with anticipation the coming of our Lord.  We seek courage and wisdom for the days ahead, and worship God with thankful and expectant hearts.

10.00 am   Parish Eucharist

Hymns: 97, 409, 178 (omitting verses 2 & 3)
Psalm: 16
During communion: 575, 625, 949

First Reading                Daniel 12:1-3
A heavenly visitor tells Daniel that at a future time of great anguish, the “great prince” Michael will arise as the protector of the people.  At that time the people will be delivered and many of those who have died will rise, to everlasting life or everlasting shame.

Second Reading           Hebrews 10: 1-25
Human priesthood can never take away sin; only Christ’s offering of himself was able to accomplish that.  The writer therefore urges his readers to have confidence in Christ and the “new and living way” he has opened up for them.

Gospel Reading            Mark 13: 1-8
The disciples admire the seeming permanence and magnificence of the Temple, but Jesus warns them of it future destruction.  This will be one of the signs of the end of the age.  The disciples are to be on their guard, and not allow any who falsely claim to be the Messiah to lead them astray.

6:00pm   Choral Evensong

Readings: Daniel 3:13 – end; Matthew 13:24-30 & 36-43
Hymns:   756, Psalm 95:1-7, 580, 638

Prayer for the Week
Your creation, O God, runs its appointed course, as from the ends of the earth you gather a people you call your own,  confirm us in the strength of your abiding work. Steady our hearts in the time of trial so that on the day of the Son of Man we may without fear rejoice to behold his appearing.  We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The General Synod of the Church of England meeting this week and the crucial issue of consecrating women as Bishops
  • An easing of the tension and violence between Israelis and Palestinians
  • Hearing dogs for deaf people
  • Those who cover sickness amongst their colleagues, often at he expense of their own wellbeing.
  • Residents of: Peel Court (PR), Hampden Gate and Hampden Rd (Sp)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  • and also further afield for:
    • Gordon Haynes, Joan and Bill Male, Richard Irvine, Alastair
  • The recently departed:
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Hilda Sandell, John Baverstock, Vera Girling

Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
Cruse Bereavement Care
Supporting bereaved people and enabling anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss.  The organisation provides support and offers information, advice, education and training services.

Do Nothing.  Christmas is coming by Bishop Stephen Cottrell
Christmas is one of the most joyful times of the year.  It can also be one of the most stressful.  So rather than a chocolate Advent calendar, this small book offers you an Advent calendar with a difference.  From 1st December all the way through to Christmas Day, you are given short, practical and entertaining steps that you can take each day to slow down, take time out- and enjoy getting ready for Christmas.  £4.50 from Rosemary 344417

Carol singing in the Market Square, Fri November 30th
This may be very early but traditionally Churches Together in Risborough have helped to start off the celebrations surrounding the switching on of the Christmas lights in Princes Risborough. There is a rehearsal on November 28th at 8 pm at the Oasis centre lounge (Bell Street, Princes Risborough) for those who can make it and the actual events starts on Friday November 30th at 6 pm with the local churches being first on. James

Volunteers Required – St Dunstan’s Leaf Sweep

Saturday Dec 1st from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.  We are looking to clear the fallen leaves from the churchyard and to carry out some general tasks such as pruning trees and maintaining paths.  We can provide some tools but if you can bring any yourself that would be extremely helpful.  We hope you can make it. James.
P.S. Rosemary (344417) will be supervising the making of the Christingles in the hall on the same morning for the service the next day. If you can help out with this please let her know. More details and timings to follow

Searchlight Theatre Company presents...

The most wonderful time of year’: this show follows the story of a family whose Christmas television is cut short and they are forced to entertain themselves. How will they survive without voting for their X Factor and Strictly favourites, hearing ‘The Sound of Music’ or looking for sunshine with Morecambe and Wise? Find out as the cast bring together a unique combination of drama and song and recreate some wonderful and classic seasonal moments on stage. The show is being organised by Church Together in Risborough and takes place on Saturday December 1st at 7.30 pm at the Oasis Centre, 9 Bell Street, Princes Risborough, HP27 0DE. Tickets are available on the door for £5 or £15 for families. The show lasts about 90 minutes with an interval.

Bible reading notes – please take a sample
There are free copies of some Bible reading notes on the table towards the back of the church. These are produced by the Bible Reading Fellowship and contain four different series so that you can pick and choose which style suits you best. James

Theft from the church
Sadly there was a theft from the church on Friday November 9th between 12.25 and 12.40 pm. No damage was done but various locks have been changed and new keys are being issued. The church is now open again to the public during the day. Please keep valuable items on your person at all times. James

10 o’clock club helpers required
We have a number of very committed people who help to run our children’s activities on a Sunday morning. They are split into different groups so that on average people help out approximately every six weeks in putting together a programme for the children to enjoy using various resources that are available. With a couple of helpers stepping down we need two or three more people to help out with the club. No skills are required just a willingness to work with young people. If you are interested in helping out, please let James know.

‘Introduction to the Bible’
This course is being run by the Diocese on Thursday evenings at Elmhurst Community Centre in Aylesbury next term.  This is open to anyone who would like to attend. Please look at the notice board in the porch if you would like more details.

Stewardship Initiative
Thank you very much for all the responses received so far. These have and will make a big difference to the ongoing life and worship of this church. It’s not too late to return your form whilst recognising there are many other ways in which people serve this Church. James
