Fifth Sunday of Lent

As the days of Jesus suffering and death draw near, God calls his people to renew their discipleship. Let us pray for grace to walk courageously in the way of the cross, committed to love one another as Christ loves us and faithfully to serve those in need.

10.00am Parish Communion and Baptism of Maximus Thomas and Ada Ramsden-Lister
Hymns: 394 (vs. 1, 2, 3, 10 & 11), 450, 195, 33
Communion: 350,182, 411

First Reading Isaiah 43:16-21
Isaiah proclaims God’s promise to restore and protect his people. He will do something new and unprecedented to bring about their salvation.

Second Reading Philippians 3:4b-14
Paul’s former righteousness has been overturned by Christ. Paul longs to be one with him, and presses on to his goal – fulfilling Christ’s call.

Gospel John 12:1-8
Jesus attends a dinner at the home of Lazarus. Mary anoints Jesus with costly perfume and so reveals the path of true discipleship.

11.30am Owlswick Holy Communion

Readings: Philippians 3 v 4b-14, John 12 v 1-8

6.00pm Evensong
Hymns: 130, Psalm 35 v1-9, 682, 206
Readings: 2 Chronicles 35 v 1-6 & 10-16, Luke 22 v 1-13

Prayer of the week
God of power, God of mercy, you bring forth springs in the wasteland and turn despair into hope. Look not upon the sins of our past, but lift from our hearts the failures that weigh us down, that we may find refreshment and life in Christ, our liberator from sin, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • All refugees who flee to escape intolerable situations in their homelands that they may be treated with compassion and fairness
  • Ada and Maximus at the start of their Christian journey
  • Those who operate helplines, for the service they provide especially for those who are housebound
  • Wycombe General Hospital. Doctors, nurses, other staff and patients.
  • The Old Garden Centre (PR) Flowers Bottom Lane & Lily Bottom Lane (Sp)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Uncle Frank, Katy, Georgina Cole, Robert, Dave Skinner, Bill Maley
  • The recently departed: Jean Taylor, Brian Watts, Pam Gordon
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Ethel Seager, Agnes Bowell, Alan Laken, Eddy Tranter, John Clegg, Mark Russell, Doris Gomme, Tom Kingham, Helen Keeping, John McMullan
Please remember the charities that the parish supports:

Pilgrim Course starts – Thursday March 17th
Meeting at The Rectory, Pilgrim is a major new teaching and discipleship resource from the Church of England. It aims to help create a place where people can explore the Christian faith together and see how it can be lived out each day. Pilgrim takes a different approach to other Christian programmes. It approaches the great issues of faith not through persuasion, but participation in a pattern of contemplation and discussion with a group of fellow travellers. Please come along at 8.00pm with your Bible for the first session which reflects on the attraction of Jesus Christ and what happens when people meet him?

Soup-makers needed!
Yes, it's time for the Christian Aid Super Soup Challenge! It's all happening on March 18th from 12.15-1.45pm. Soup, crusty roll and a hot drink for £4.50 in the hall. If you can make some soup please let me know. Thanks, Rosemary 344417.

Stewardship Letter
Last year the parish accounts showed a deficit of about £30,000 and this year’s deficit is projected to be about £26,000. This is partly owing to a huge amount of expenditure on our church buildings which is unlikely to be repeated in the short term and a significant increase in the parish share which enables the Oxford Diocese to pay the cost of a full time priest in the parish. A letter will be going to members of the congregation in the next month or so explaining all of this in further detail so that people can make an informed decision about their financial giving to St. Dunstan’s/St. Peter’s. The average weekly outgoings of the church are about £2,500 and the average Sunday collection at services about £250. James
