Fourth Sunday of Lent - Mothering Sunday

Today is Mothering Sunday. It may seem to be a day taken over by the secular world. It may seem to be all about celebrating people’s biological mothers. It’s certainly a day that as many people find difficult as find it wonderful. The Church is the place that holds all this together and invites us to look more deeply at the family God calls us to be.

8.00am Holy Communion
Readings: Exodus 16 v 2-7a, John 6 v 1-14

10.00am Mothering Sunday Service
Hymns: 6, 67, 54, 856, 332

Reading 1 Samuel 1:20-end
Samuel’s mother is Hannah, who was barren for years until she gave birth to her beloved son, Samuel. Out of gratitude and faithfulness, she gave him to the Lord, a huge sacrifice that prefigures the sacrifice made centuries later by Mary, the mother of Jesus.

6.00pm Evensong
Hymns: 580, Psalm 30, 350, 333
Readings: Prayer of Manasseh, 2 Timothy 4:1-18

Prayer of the week
God of love, passionate and strong, tender and careful: watch over us and hold us all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • The people of Syria, for those who are seeking to bring an end to the conflict there, for those forced to leave their homeland as a result of violence, poverty and oppression:
  • Those who have nurtured and ‘mothered’ us in our home life and faith journey
  • The work of Hospices, for all who manage the pain and bring comfort to the terminally ill
  • Dentists, physiotherapists, chiropodists and other health practitioners.
  • The Crescent (PR) Church End & Lyde End (B)
  • Those who are in need in our parish:
  • And also further afield for:
    • Alastair, Uncle Frank, Katy, Georgina Cole, Robert, Dave Skinner, Bill Maley
  • The recently departed: Babs Dudley, Jean Taylor, Brian Watts
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time:
    • Ethel Galley, Marjorie Browne
Please remember the charities that the parish supports:
Relief for Oppressed People Everywhere (ROPE) is committed to combating the impact of poverty across the world. www.rope.org.uk.

Pilgrim Course starts – Thursday March 17th
Meeting at The Rectory, Pilgrim is a major new teaching and discipleship resource from the Church of England. It aims to help create a place where people can explore the Christian faith together and see how it can be lived out each day. Pilgrim takes a different approach to other Christian programmes. It approaches the great issues of faith not through persuasion, but participation in a pattern of contemplation and discussion with a group of fellow travellers. Please come along at 8.00pm with your Bible for the first session which reflects on the attraction of Jesus Christ and what happens when people meet him?

Soup-makers needed!

Yes, it's time for the Christian Aid Super Soup Challenge! It's all happening on March 18th from 12.15-1.45pm. Soup, crusty roll and a hot drink for £4.50 in the hall. If you can make some soup please let me know. Thanks, Rosemary 344417.

Tickets cost £8. There is a complimentary glass of wine/soft drink with tickets available from Johanna Powell 01844 343996 or Rachel Ungi 01844 761535.

Stewardship Letter
Last year the parish accounts showed a deficit of about £30,000 and this year’s deficit is projected to be about £26,000. This is partly owing to a huge amount of expenditure on our church buildings which is unlikely to be repeated in the short term and a significant increase in the parish share which enables the Oxford Diocese to pay the cost of a full time priest in the parish. A letter will be going to members of the congregation in the next month or so explaining all of this in further detail so that people can make an informed decision about their financial giving to St. Dunstan’s/St. Peter’s. The average weekly outgoings of the church are about £2,500 and the average Sunday collection at services about £250. James
