Today we hear how a foreigner returned to give thanks to Christ while others
took their healing for granted.

Paul suffers hardship for the sake of God’s people. He encourages Timothy to remain faithful and to do his best to present himself to God as one approved by him.

Gospel Luke 17:11-19
A group of lepers ask Jesus for help. He heals them all, but only the Samaritan returns to say thank you.

O God, our life, our health, our salvation, look with mercy on your people. Stir up in us a saving faith, that believing, we may be healed, and being healed, we may worthily give you thanks. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

May our worship renew us in spirit and truth, that we may be living signs of God’s kingdom on earth and so bring hope to this troubled and divided world.

Psalm: 119 v 97-104

God’s people taking responsibility for their own lives is the prelude to a new covenant in which God will write the law on their hearts.

Second Reading 2 Timothy 3:14 – 4:5
Paul encourages Timothy to be strong in faith, attentive to scripture and to continue Christ’s work in the face of opposition and suffering.

Gospel Luke 18:1-8
Persistence in prayer is vital, says Jesus. If the unjust judge responds to the widow’s constant pleading, how much more will God do for God’s people?
