Sunday 10th March 2019

First Sunday of Lent

Jesus entered the empty desert to set his heart wholly on God’s purpose for his life. In this time of worship together, and throughout this season of Lent, may we clear away all distractions and live as people fully focused on the Spirit’s presence in the world.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Deuteronomy 26.1-11
As the Israelites offer their first fruits, so the ceremony recalls all that God has done for them, bringing them from slavery to a homeland.

Second Reading: Romans 10.8b-13
Confessing belief in the risen Lord is central to faith, giving strength to believers and opening their hearts to salvation.

Gospel: Luke 4.1-13
Tempted as we are, Jesus stands steadfast, rejecting the devil and relying on the Spirit to lead him through his desert retreat and bring focus to his ministry.

Hymns: 190, 86, 617 & 689,
Communion: 483, 412 and 484
Anthem: Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake (R. Farrant)

11.30am Owlswick Holy Communion
Readings: Deuteronomy 26.1-11, Luke 4.1-13

6.00pm Evensong
Readings: Jonah 3, Luke 18.9-14.
Hymns: 69, 375, 70; Psalm: 119:73-80

Prayer of the week:
Lord our God, you alone do we worship, only your word gives life. Sustain your Church on its Lenten journey. When we walk through the desert of temptation, strengthen us to renounce the power of evil. When our faith is tested by doubt, illuminate our hearts with Easter’s bright promise. We ask this through Christ, deliverance and hope, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Our keeping of Lent and how we might deepen our faith
  • Vulnerable young people caught up in gang violence and all victims of knife crime

The Psalm
There has been a wide ranging conversation about the psalm and its place in worship. It makes sense to retain it on occasions when it can be sung, read or said as part of the Old Testament Scriptures. James

More works at St. Dunstan’s
Following the successful redecoration (£25,000) of St. Dunstan’s last month the essential repairs to the stonework (£11,000) are now well underway. Once these works are completed the next project in the programme of works is to have all of the windows cleaned, as well as the pulpit, and the decorative metal band at St. Peter’s Chapel, Owlswick, conserved.  A short video of the redecoration works can be found on this link on the website http://www.stdunstanschurch.com/gallery.html James
