Sunday 17th March 2019

Second Sunday of Lent

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid?” In a world full of fear, where life seems fragile, we turn to God in faith.

10.00am Parish Communion

In response to Abram’s doubts, God confirms in a solemn ceremony the promise that Abram will have many descendants, who will live in a special God-given land.

Second Reading: Philippians 3.17-4.1
The fact that our true home is in heaven must affect our earthly priorities.

Gospel: Luke 13.31-end
Jesus laments over Jerusalem, the city special to God, which nevertheless has a history of persecuting God’s prophets, and is the city where he will die.

Hymns: 340, 489, 252.
Lenten litany: ‘Hearken, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have sin-ned against thee’
Communion: 458, 342, 651
Anthem: Wash me throughly by David Halls

Hymns: 690, 281, 208; Psalm: 135:1-12

Prayer of the week:
God of the covenant, your presence fills us with awe, your word gives us unshakable hope. Fix in our hearts the image of your Son in glory, that, sustained on the path of discipleship, we may pass over with him to newness of life. Grant this through Christ, our deliverance and hope, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Psalm
There has been a wide ranging conversation about the psalm and its place in worship. It makes sense to retain it on occasions when it can be sung, read or said as part of the Old Testament Scriptures. James
