Sunday 24th March 2019

Third Sunday of Lent

Today we learn all over again that we belong to the God who loves us to bits and will not leave us in despair. Even when our lives and this beautiful planet seem under threat, the maker of the stars and sea will not abandon creation.

10.00am Parish Communion

First Reading: Isaiah 55.1-9
There is an abundance for all in God’s economy that is offered without price to anyone who asks.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10.1-13
God’s people have often forgotten whose they are and have suffered as a consequence of that forgetting, so be strong and remember!

Gospel: Luke 13.1-9
The question of why some people suffer so much is sometimes asked when we look to blame people for their situation, but Jesus won’t accept this as an explanation.

Hymns: 642, 626, 29, 177 (vs. 1, 3, 5, 7 & 8)
Communion: 82, 168, 165.
Anthem: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

3.00pm Owlswick Evensong
Readings: Genesis 28.10-19a, John 1.35-end.
Hymns: 378 416, 445, 376; Psalm: 12

Prayer of the week:
God of salvation, we stand before you on holy ground, for your name is glorified and your mercy revealed whenever your mighty deeds are remembered. Since you are holy and forbearing, turn us from every rash and shallow judgement to seek the ways of repentance. We ask this through Christ, our deliverance and hope, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • All political leaders that they may act with wisdom and discretion, patience and humility in resolving the Brexit process
  • All those caught in the cyclone in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi that they may receive the practical and emotional support they need.

The Psalm
