Birth of John the Baptist

Let us praise God together as we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ the Messiah.

10.00 am          Parish Eucharist – Addington Setting
Preacher: Canon Robin Brown

Second Reading           Acts 13: 14b – 26
Paul, speaking in the synagogue at Antioch in Pisidia, reviews the history of Israel’s relationship to God, concluding with John the Baptist, the immediate forerunner of Jesus the Saviour.

Gospel Reading             Luke 1: 57 – 66, 80
Paul shows how baptism into Jesus Christ brings unity between Jews and Gentiles.

6.00pm             Choral Evensong, Owlswick
With singers from Germany: Klaus Holzweißig and Almuth Hoehnel

Readings: Malachi 4 Matthew 11: 2-19
Hymns:   461, Psalm 82, 353, 410, 436

Prayer for the Week

Almighty God, by whose providence your servant John the Baptist         was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of your Son our Saviour by the preaching of repentance: lead us to repent according to his preaching and, after his example, constantly to speak the truth, boldly to rebuke vice, and patiently to suffer for the truth’s sake; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Your prayers are asked this week for:

  • Preparations for the Lighthouse Christian holiday week
  • A quick peaceful solution to the rising protests in Egypt and the escalating violence in Syria
  • Fair regulation of films and music; that artists may not be deprived of their fair reward through the piracy of technology.
  • The mission, ministry and congregational life of The Chilterns Christian Fellowship.
  • Residents of Wellington Ave (PR), Little Lane (Sa)
  • Those in need who are known in our parish:
  • and also further afield for:
    • Gordon Haynes; Joan Male; Richard Irvine; Sally Maddox; Sarah, Matt and Riley; Emma, Matt and Olivia
  • The recently departed:
    • Anne Corsham
  • Those whose anniversary of death falls at this time particularly:
    • Richard Millard, Dorothy Lockwood, Barbara Chalkley, Florence Fisher.
Please remember the charities that St Dunstan's supports, in particular this week:
Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, offering specialist and supportive care and advice for patients with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses in their homes.
